Kidney Island is a small National Nature Reserve about 16 km (10 miles) from Stanley and one of the most distinctive guided wildlife trips near the capital. You cannot simply arrive independently: visits require a permit, boat transport and a guide. The island is known for rockhopper and Magellanic penguins, sea lions, Cobb’s wrens, dense tussac grass and the dramatic evening return of sooty shearwaters.

Boat and guide
Kidney Island is accessible only by boat. Official visitor information describes it as around a 30-minute boat journey from Stanley, followed by a small-craft landing on the south-west side. You also need a guide; tourism information lists local launch and guiding providers, but confirm current availability directly rather than relying on an old operator list.
Wildlife
Rockhopper and Magellanic penguins breed here. Cobb’s wrens and tussac birds move through the vegetation, and sea lions may be around the landing shore. A signature experience is the return of thousands of sooty shearwaters toward dusk. The exact wildlife experience changes with season and conditions.
Biosecurity is essential
Kidney Island’s visitor guidance asks people to check clothing, bags and footwear for seeds and dirt and disinfect footwear before visiting. Do not bring plants or animals, keep food sealed, avoid dense shearwater burrows and do not disturb bait boxes. These measures protect a sensitive island ecosystem from invasive species and pathogens.
Wildlife rules
Remain at least 6 m from wild animals, keep outside colonies, give wildlife right of way and do not block seals or seabirds moving between land and sea. Photography should never involve chasing or startling wildlife. Open flames and smoking are prohibited because of fire risk.
Is Kidney Island suitable for a cruise day?
