Bertha’s Beach is a white-sand wildlife site on Fitzroy Farm, East Falkland, known especially for gentoo penguins. It is also home to Magellanic penguins, endemic Falkland flightless steamer ducks and other birdlife, while Commerson’s and Peale’s dolphins are frequently seen offshore. Day visitors need permission before visiting, and charges may apply.

Permission is required
The current Falkland Islands Tourist Board listing says permission for a day excursion should be obtained from the Falkland Landholdings tourism contact before visiting. Do not treat the beach as an unrestricted public attraction simply because it appears on a map. Confirm access and any current charge when planning.
Wildlife at Bertha’s Beach
Gentoo penguins are the main draw, but the wider coastal ecosystem is the reason to slow down. Watch for Magellanic penguins, ruddy-headed geese, terns and steamer ducks. Dolphins may appear close to shore, though no wild sighting is guaranteed. Sea lions may also be present.
Wildlife etiquette
Keep at least the recommended 6 m distance from wildlife, remain outside colonies and never stand between an animal and the sea. If a penguin approaches you, stay calm rather than moving closer. Keep dogs, food waste and loose equipment away from wildlife areas and follow any site-specific instructions.
What to bring
Bring layers, a waterproof shell, strong footwear, sunscreen, water and binoculars. Weather can shift quickly even on a bright day. A telephoto lens is useful for photographs because it lets you frame wildlife without reducing your distance.
Bertha’s Beach or Volunteer Point?
Choose Volunteer Point when king penguins are the priority. Choose Bertha’s Beach when you want gentoo penguins and a broad beach/wetland setting without making the king-penguin colony the focus.
