Wear layers plus a waterproof, wind-resistant outer shell in the Falkland Islands. Conditions can change quickly, so the goal is not one huge coat but a system you can adjust through the day. Outside Stanley, strong walking boots are recommended; a warm hat, light gloves, sunscreen and sunglasses are also useful even in the visitor season.
A simple three-layer system
- Base layer: comfortable synthetic or merino top that manages moisture.
- Mid-layer: fleece, wool sweater or light insulated jacket.
- Outer layer: waterproof shell with a hood that blocks wind.
Why layers beat one heavy coat
Official visitor guidance often describes Falklands weather as “four seasons in one day.” You may walk in sunshine, stop in a cold wind and encounter a shower within the same outing. Layers let you respond without carrying a winter expedition coat all day.
Footwear
Strong boots are recommended for walking outside Stanley because formal paths are uncommon and ground may be uneven, grassy or muddy. Waterproof walking boots are the best all-round option for wildlife sites and longer walks. Comfortable walking shoes can be sufficient for a Stanley-only day.
Hat, gloves and neck protection
A close-fitting warm hat works better than a loose brim in strong wind. Light or waterproof gloves are useful when standing still at colonies or on exposed coasts. A neck gaiter adds warmth without much luggage weight.
Do not forget sun protection
The Falkland Islands Tourist Board specifically warns visitors about sunburn. Wear sunscreen even when conditions feel cool. Sunglasses and lip protection are useful on bright beaches and around water.
Cruise passengers
For a Stanley walking day, use normal comfortable travel clothing plus a waterproof layer. For Volunteer Point or another countryside excursion, upgrade to stronger footwear and bring an extra insulating layer. Your ship may supply specialist outerwear on expedition itineraries, so check before buying duplicates.
Island-hopping travelers
