If you have one cruise day in Stanley and do not want a full-day wildlife excursion, spend the morning on the cathedral, waterfront and Historic Dockyard Museum, have lunch in town, then use the afternoon for either more Stanley exploration or a pre-arranged trip to nearby Gypsy Cove. Keep a generous tender buffer at the end of the day.
9:00–9:20: Jetty Visitor Centre
After tendering ashore, start at the Tourist Information Centre beside the Public Jetty. Pick up the current street map, check opening hours and confirm your ship’s final tender time. Actual arrival times vary, so treat these times as a model rather than a promise.
9:20–10:00: Cathedral, Whalebone Arch and Ross Road
Walk to Christ Church Cathedral and the Whalebone Arch, then continue along the waterfront. This gives you Stanley’s most recognizable landmarks without committing to transport.
10:00–12:00: Historic Dockyard Museum
Give the museum enough time to understand the islands beyond the cruise stop. Its collections span social, maritime, natural and military history, providing useful context for everything else you see that day.
12:00–13:15: Lunch and central Stanley
Choose a café or pub, then browse local shops. On busy cruise days, lunch venues can fill quickly, so flexibility is more useful than building the whole day around one restaurant.
13:15–15:15: Choose your afternoon
Option A: stay in Stanley for memorials, harbour views, shops and a relaxed walk. Option B: take a pre-arranged transfer or tour to Gypsy Cove for Magellanic penguins and coastal scenery. Do not start an unplanned excursion unless the return timing is clear.
Final hour: return toward the jetty
Be back near the tender landing well before the final tender. Wind and sea conditions can affect tender operations, and your ship’s instructions always override a generic itinerary.
When to choose Volunteer Point instead
