Sea Lion Island is one of the Falklands’ most concentrated wildlife destinations. Elephant seals, southern sea lions, three penguin species and abundant ground-nesting birds can all be found around a low-lying island that is easy to explore on foot. Sea Lion Lodge is the island’s only visitor accommodation, putting travelers unusually close to major wildlife areas.

Elephant seals
Sea Lion Island is a major elephant-seal destination. The official tourism board says more than 2,000 can be present at the height of the breeding season in October. Give seals substantial space, never block their route to the sea and follow lodge or local wildlife guidance.

Orcas
The island is also known for orcas. Official visitor information says they may visit through summer and are seen most frequently around mid-November to mid-December, when young elephant seals begin entering the sea. Wildlife is never guaranteed, so treat this as a seasonal opportunity rather than a promised sighting.
Penguins and birds
Gentoo, Magellanic and rockhopper penguins breed on the island. Its lack of introduced rodent predators also supports ground-nesting birds including the endemic Cobb’s wren and tussac birds. Sea Lion Island is recognized as an Important Bird Area and a National Nature Reserve.
Staying at Sea Lion Lodge
Sea Lion Lodge is purpose-built and full-board. The current official listing says it has en-suite rooms for up to 20 guests, provides meals, and offers Wi-Fi access. Wildlife viewing starts close to the property, which reduces the need for vehicle-based touring found at some larger Falklands destinations.
Walking and weather
The low terrain makes much of the island approachable on foot, but distance, wind and wet weather still matter. Carry layers and a waterproof, and avoid using wildlife trails as shortcuts. Ask the lodge about current routes and any seasonal restrictions before setting out.
Getting there

Best length of stay
Two or three nights gives a much better chance to experience the island’s wildlife rhythms than a rushed overnight. Photographers and birdwatchers may value longer, particularly when weather changes the best walking windows.
