Biosecurity in the Falkland Islands starts with a simple rule: arrive with clean footwear, clothing and equipment, and clean them again when moving between sensitive wildlife sites or islands. Seeds, soil, insects and pathogens can travel unnoticed on boots, bags, tripods and hook-and-loop fasteners. Food, plant and animal products are also subject to import controls, so check current government rules before packing.
Before you travel
- Scrub soil from boot soles and tread.
- Remove seeds and plant material from clothing, socks, bags and camera gear.
- Inspect hook-and-loop fasteners and mesh pockets.
- Pack clean equipment rather than assuming it can be dealt with after arrival.
- Check current import rules before bringing meat, dairy, eggs, fruit, vegetables, plants or animal products.
Island-to-island biosecurity
Cleaning is not only an international-arrival issue. The Falklands contain islands and reserves with different invasive-species risks. Recheck boots, trouser cuffs, backpacks, walking poles, tripods and camera bags before transferring between sites. Follow accommodation, guide and reserve instructions even when they are stricter than your previous stop.
Wildlife sites
Do not enter colonies unnecessarily or walk through burrow-rich ground when an established route exists. Kidney Island, for example, has specific visitor biosecurity guidance and asks visitors to disinfect footwear. Sensitive sites may have additional restrictions.
Why the rules matter
Remote islands can support native wildlife precisely because some invasive species are absent. A single seed or small invertebrate can create a disproportionate conservation problem. Biosecurity therefore belongs in your daily travel routine, not only at customs.
