The Cape Pembroke Lighthouse walk is one of the best long walks from the Stanley area, but it should not be confused with an easy waterfront stroll. The lighthouse stands on the easternmost point of the Falklands, beyond exposed coast, open ground and beaches where wind and changing weather are part of the experience.
How long is the Cape Pembroke walk?
The official walking material describes a route of roughly 17 km. Tourism information notes that the lighthouse is just over seven miles east of Stanley and can also be approached by vehicle track. Walking time depends heavily on your starting point, route, stops and conditions, so treat it as a substantial outing rather than a quick attraction.
What you see on the route
The Cape Pembroke peninsula opens onto broad South Atlantic scenery. Depending on your chosen route you can experience Surf Bay, Yorke Bay, coastal birds and views across low open country before reaching the lighthouse. The landscape is a major part of the walk; the destination is not the only reason to go.
Weather and navigation
Carry waterproof and windproof layers even when Stanley starts clear. Open terrain gives little shelter, and conditions can change quickly. Take water, a charged phone and an offline map. Do not rely on mobile coverage as your only navigation tool.
Wildlife and access
Follow marked or locally advised routes and respect any current access restrictions around Yorke Bay and sensitive wildlife areas. The Falklands Countryside Code recommends keeping at least six metres from wildlife and never blocking an animal’s route to the sea.
Who should choose this walk?
Choose Cape Pembroke if you have several hours, suitable footwear and want a genuine Falklands coastal walk. If your cruise call is short, the central Stanley walking tour is much easier to fit around tender times.
