For South Atlantic expedition travel, use fully waterproof overtrousers that fit comfortably over base or hiking layers and can be put on over expedition boots. They protect against rain, wet Zodiac seats, spray and damp ground during wildlife viewing.
Look for practical boot access
Long ankle or side zips make it much easier to pull waterproof pants over bulky boots. Check that closures remain protected from water and that the lower leg can be secured rather than flapping.
Uninsulated is more flexible
A waterproof shell pant lets you choose the insulation underneath. On milder Falklands walks you may need only hiking trousers below; colder Zodiac rides can justify a thermal base layer.
Test mobility before departure
Practice stepping up, crouching and sitting while wearing the complete system. Expedition transfers and wildlife photography demand more movement than standing in ordinary rain.
Combine the shell with the layering approach in our Falklands clothing guide.
Side zips are unusually useful on expeditions
Waterproof trousers often go on after weather deteriorates, when you are already wearing boots. Long ankle or full side zips make that much easier. Reinforced lower legs add durability but also weight. For Zodiac use, check that the seated fit does not pull tight across knees and that the waistband remains comfortable under a lifejacket or backpack hip belt.
