Bigger is not automatically better: if your itinerary includes FIGAS, compact luggage is easier to manage within the visitor baggage allowance.

Why 20–30 litres is the useful range
A typical Falklands wildlife day requires layers rather than bulky expedition equipment. You need room to remove a fleece when the sun appears and put it back on when wind rises. A 20–30 L bag normally handles this without encouraging unnecessary overpacking.
Prioritize weather protection
Official visitor guidance stresses rapidly changing weather and recommends carrying a waterproof. Your bag needs similar thinking. A fitted rain cover is useful; a roll-top dry bag inside the pack is even better for electronics and documents. “Water-resistant” zippers should not be treated as fully waterproof during sustained rain.
Choose a pack that is easy to biosecure
Wildlife-site biosecurity involves removing soil, seeds and organic material from clothing and equipment. Packs with excessive mesh, exposed hook-and-loop areas or complicated external webbing can trap debris. Before moving between sensitive sites, inspect the base, pockets and straps as well as your footwear.

For most travelers, a conventional daypack plus a padded camera insert is more versatile and leaves space for layers, water and lunch. Wildlife photographers carrying multiple bodies and long lenses have different requirements and should prioritize harness stability and fast weather sealing.
