For Falklands boat trips and Zodiac-style landings, a 10–20 L roll-top dry bag is a practical size for electronics, gloves, spare layers and small camera items; choose 20–30 L if the bag must carry most of your day gear. Prioritize a simple waterproof closure and cleanable exterior over extra pockets.
What to look for
- Roll-top closure with enough material for several proper rolls
- Welded or well-sealed seams
- Secure attachment or shoulder strap
- Light-colored or visible interior if you carry small batteries/cards
- Smooth exterior that is easy to inspect and clean for biosecurity
Why a normal backpack is not enough
IAATO’s Zodiac guidance specifically recommends weatherproof protection for non-waterproof items such as cameras and binoculars because spray and rain are normal operational risks. A rain cover protects differently from a sealed dry bag and can shift in strong wind.
Do you need a submersible bag?
Most travelers need protection from spray, rain and brief wet handling rather than prolonged underwater use. If the manufacturer claims an IP rating, check exactly what that rating covers and whether the closure is included.
Dry bag versus waterproof backpack
A roll-top dry bag is best when water protection is the primary job; a normal backpack is usually better for all-day carrying and quick organization. For Zodiac landings, many travelers place sensitive gear inside a smaller dry bag within their daypack. Check whether a manufacturer describes a bag as waterproof, water-resistant or submersible—those terms are not interchangeable.
