A neck gaiter is one of the most weight-efficient Falklands clothing items. Choose a light or midweight breathable gaiter that can cover the neck, lower face and ears without becoming bulky under a jacket hood. Wind management matters more than extreme insulation.
Merino or synthetic?
Merino is comfortable across a wide temperature range and resists odor. Synthetic fabric usually dries faster and can be very light. Either works if it remains comfortable when damp.
Avoid excessive bulk
Thick fleece gaiters are warm during static viewing but can overheat on walks and interfere with jacket collars. A lighter gaiter plus hood gives more adjustment.
Keep a spare dry
A second gaiter is useful after rain, sea spray or a sweaty hike and weighs very little compared with most cold-weather gear.
Use it as part of the hood system
A gaiter fills the exposed gap between jacket collar and hat and can cover cheeks when wind strengthens. It should still breathe when pulled over the mouth. Thin merino and fast-drying synthetic options pack almost invisibly, so carrying a spare is easy. Avoid loose scarves around Zodiac boarding, strong wind or equipment straps.
