A Zodiac-style landing transfers passengers from the expedition ship to shore in a small inflatable boat. You will receive safety instructions, wear a personal flotation device, board with crew assistance and follow the expedition team’s directions at the landing site. Conditions determine whether the boat can land at all.
Before boarding
Secure loose items, dress for spray and cold, and follow the ship’s boot and biosecurity procedure. Antarctic visitor guidance emphasizes cleaning equipment and footwear so soil, plants and other material are not moved between sites.
In the small boat
Keep hands inside when instructed, remain seated or positioned as the crew directs and do not stand for photographs without permission. Small boats must operate in ways that minimize wildlife disturbance.
At shore
The expedition team marks safe areas, explains wildlife boundaries and may establish a walking route. Site-specific rules can be stricter than general visitor guidance.
Returning to the ship
Expect another assisted transfer and cleaning process. Keep your waterproof layer and PFD on until crew tell you they can be removed.
What to have ready before boarding
Wear the expedition-issued or operator-approved outer gear, secure backpack straps, protect cameras from spray and keep both hands available when crew request it. Boarding often involves a sailor’s grip rather than grabbing fingers or wrists. Listen to the driver’s seating instructions and never stand, swap places or trail hands in the water without permission.
